Search the St. Petersburg Marriage Database
This database was originally hosted on the Odessa3 web site. You can also search the Birth and Death databases.
IMPORTANT NOTE FOR IE7 (Internet Explorer v.7) USERS: Some versions of this program do not work correctly when viewing the database results page. You can use IE6, Netscape, Firefox, or Opera browsers. Or upgrade your version to v.7.0.6 which appears to work correctly.
Notes
Volunteers have gone through the original database, conducting a major "cleanup" of the information contained there. Info previously contained in the remarks column (especially brides surnames) has been moved to the bride column allowing for more complete surname search capabilities. Some new data has also been added involving missing registration numbers. In using this data, please note the following important information.
1. The following years of marriage records are missing from the original microfilms: 1837-1842; 1844; 1848-1849; 1851; 1854; 1856
2. There are no filmed marriage records for the Rozyszcze Parish in THIS database for the years 1870-71 and after 1880. For information about other sources for records from this parish, see our Volhynian Parishes Database page.
3. There are no filmed marriage records for the Heimtal Parish for 1873-1874.
4. There are no filmed marriage records for any Volhynian parishes for the year 1884.
5. When using these records, it is important to understand how daughter parishes split off from the original Zhitomir Parish. Time lines and other information about this can be found on our Volhynian Parish History page.
Search Criteria
1. "Normal Search" is the default search. Because we use an Oracle database engine, as you do a "Normal Search" you will quickly find all occurrences of any given sequence of letters in a given search field in the database. Thus, whether the sequence is a complete name or only a portion of a name, no matter where you seek the sequence, it will be found. For instance, if you type in "jaeger" (without the quote marks), you will find entries that include, "Jaeger, "Lobenjaeger", and "Geiger or Jaeger".
2. "Exact Match" will only find entries that include the exact letter sequence entered, and will not return any entry with additional spaces or other characters in the field searched.
3. There are no umlauts in the database (dotted vowels). Most of the umlauted letters have been replaced with ae, oe, or ue, but there are some names where the umlauted letter was changed to simply a, o, or u. You need, therefore, to do a search for both spellings of the name (ie., search for Konig as well as Koenig, etc.).
4. You do not need to enter data in all search boxes to find data. In fact, the more data you enter into the search fields, the fewer will be the results that will be returned, and it is likely that you will eliminate the data you seek if you narrow the search too much.
