Lutheran Records in Russian Poland

GENERAL NOTES:

1. THIS PAGE IS UNDER REGULAR CONSTRUCTION and will remain so for a long. time. We encourage you to come back from time to time to check for changes and additions.

2. Although we would like to make the original Polish records available to all, copyright restrictions prohibit us from posting them at this time. We are in the process of negotiating rights to post these original records. In the meantime, the links below will end, for members and non-members alike, at the listing of the film numbers that contain the original records

3. If you find films for the Lutheran Church in Poland that are not listed here, please let us know. Also, if you find any errors below, please let us know by contacting us at databases@sggee.org

4. We believe the film listings that follow to be accurate. Transcription errors do occur, however, so you are advised to compare the film numbers found in the parishes below with those shown in the Family History Library (FHL) computer listings found at all FHLs before actually ordering the films.

Evangelical (Lutheran) Church Parish Records in Russian Poland

Included with all of the people who lived in Poland, a significant number were of German ancestry. Most were also of the Evangelical (or Lutheran) faith. These people moved into Poland from the German states and Prussia at least as early as the late 18th century, and somewhat continuously in large numbers until at least the 1870s. By about 1900, many of these people had left this area to move to present-day eastern Poland, Volhynia, or other places. It appears that a significant number never left Poland until at least World War II.

1. Poland, as used here, and until we discover a better definition, will, in part, be generally the area shown on a map by A. Breyer dated 1938 titled “Karte Der Deutschen Siedlungen in Mittelpolen” (= Map of German Colonies in Middle Poland). That map lists the Evangelical (or Lutheran) parishes and the date of establishment and are noted in the list that follows with a 1. The list of parishes from that map has been supplemented from the following sources.

2. A second source of parish names is “Verzeichnis der Gemeinden und Pastoren der Evangelisch-Augsburgischen Kirche in Polen, Jahr 1910” (=List of Parishes and Pastors of the Evangelical Church in Poland in the year 1910) and are noted in the list that follows with a 2.

3. A third source of parishes is a portion of a map entitled “Die evang.-Luth. Gemeinden in Mittelpolen- 1939” (=The Evangelical Lutheran Parishes in Middle Poland-1939) and are noted in the list that follows with a 3.

4. A fourth source for the list which follows is from the LDS Church Family History Library (FHL) Catalog, and the items found are noted with a 4.

5. A fifth source for the list which follows is a map entitled "Die Gemeinden der Evangelisch-Augsburgischen Kirche in Polen am 1.9.1939" The Evangelical Lutheran Parishes in Poland on September 1, 1939) and are noted in the list that follows with a 5.

Family History Library filming generally ends with about the 1880s records, because the remaining records were not yet 100 years old at the time of filming. Because records after about 1869 are in the more difficult (to us) Russian Cyrillic, the Society for German Genealogy in Eastern Europe will, at this time, limit the tranlation of Lutheran parish indexes to 1869 (except for those cases where the film continues in German or Polish) and earlier. We will also include later indices where our volunteers have undertaken the translation of the later indices that are avaialble.

Handwritten records were kept for all births, marriages and deaths that were reported to the Lutheran Church. If an event occurred before the establishment of a Lutheran parish, the record is most likely in a nearby parish that was already established before the time of the event. In some cases, even though the event was for a person of the Evangelical (or Lutheran) faith, the event may be recorded in the Catholic Church records for that area.

The names of the Evangelical (or Lutheran) parishes, their province in Poland as shown on the above noted Breyer map, their date of establishment, and our comments on the status of scans of indexes are as follows.

Notes for the list that follows:

1. The date of establishment listed is from the 1938 Breyer map if shown on that map. If there is no additional date following the first date listed below, and the parish records exist, they are from the first noted date.

2. If there is no first date, none is shown on the Breyer map.

3. Many of the dates below are followed by another date with a question mark. This second date is the earliest date of filmed as records as shown in the FHL Catalog:

4. Click on any green colored parish below to view the listing of films for that parish. If the field under Status has a name shown, that individual is translating at least the indices for the parish. As soon as we have copyright release, we will post a database of these translations in the members area of our web site.

5. No attempt has been made to correlate the parishes listed below to those of present-day Poland. This is partly due to the fact that Poland again changed all province names in 1998. It is not known whether the boundaries of East and West Prussia noted below are the same as those shown on the Breyer map.

6. NKLR= No known Lutheran Records

7. Note that some of the parish films include as many of three different copies of the same record. It is believed that where these multiple copies exist, that the FHL filmed actually found the original record and one or more hand written copies as produced by the parish clergy. See Suwalki films below for an example.

Wlodawa - Most of the records in this list are for parishes of the Ewangelisch Augsburg (Lutheran) Church in Poland. The Ewangelisch Reformierte (Reformed) Church served Wlodawa. Most of the Germans in this parish were from Neudorf / Neubrow on the east side of the Bug River. This was the oldest long standing German settlement in Polish territory going back to the 1600s. Since it was on the east side of the Bug, it was technically in Volhynia so we have recorded the available records there. This church may have also covered some later Germans settelements in the northern part of what was later the Lublin Parish. Records date back to the 1790s.
