Baptist Church Records in Poland
Included with all of the people who lived in Poland, a significant number were of German ancestry, some of whom were of the Baptist faith. These people moved into Poland from the German states and Prussia at least as early as the late 18th century, and somewhat continuously in large numbers until at least the 1870s. It is important to note that many Baptist churches were founded as the result of significant conversions from Lutheran and other faiths. Therefore, if your roots are Baptist, you might expect to find earlier ancestors being Lutheran.
Poland, as used here refers to Russian Poland.
Family History Library filming generally ends with about the 1880s records, because the remaining records were not yet 100 years old at the time of filming. Because records after about 1869 are in the more difficult (to us) Russian Cyrillic, the Society for German Genealogy in Eastern Europe will, at this time, limit the tranlation of Baptist parish indexes to about 1869 (except for those cases where the film continues in German or Polish) and earlier. We will also include later indices where our volunteers have undertaken the translation of the later indices that are avaialble.
Handwritten records were kept for all births, marriages and deaths that were reported to the Baptist Church. If an event occurred before the establishment of a Baptist Church, or if the event occurred in a village that was some distance away from the Baptist Church, the record may be recorded in the nearest Catholic or Lutheran Church. This process was mandated by civil authorities.
Click on the parish below to view the listing of films for that parish. If we are translating the indices for that parish, the Status column will indicate the person doing the translations.
