Not sure where you are getting these terms.  Knowing the context and origin 
might help to understand them.

My guess for "gan" in the noted context is that it actually should be a 'j' 
which can carry a 'y' sound as in Wolinjen = Wolhynien (German) = Volhynia 
(English).
