Hello Stephen,
try the spelling STANKIEWICZ which is the most actual one in Polish and means 
"son of Stanko". There was a noble family Stankiewicz v.Mogila in Austri, 
several officers named Stankiewicz have been murdered in Katyn and there was 
a General Stankiewicz who fought in the Polish Ligue against Hitler.
