[Ger-Poland-Volhynia] Sachsen = Saxony?

Johann Glaesel died on 1 Aug 1867 at Rokin, Volhynia (just north of Lutsk)
at the age of 76. The birth record said he was born at Sachsen (not
entirely certain of spelling, the "a" could be "e" or "o")

Is Sachsen equivalent to Saxony? And if so, would Johann Glaesel have gone
directly from Saxony to Volhynia, or would he have stopped off in Poland for
some years? The first record of Johann in Volhynia is the birth of a son
Gottfried in 1855 at Alexandowka.

Thanks for any help.
