A MB cousin who is a Kowalke once said that the
Kowalke and Kowalski were roughly equivalent Polish
and German names. So in his family tree he found
ancesters listed both ways. Incidentally, a Kowal is a
blacksmith. It is not uncommon to see that happen in
many surnames. One ancestor of mine is Wessaloswki
one time and Frohlich the next. Luckily both are "happy
people."

Subject: [Ger-Poland-Volhynia] Re: An Eastern
European Surname(Kowalke)

I am searching for any information anyone may have
regarding Micheal and
Julianna Kowalke from the Volhynia area. Micheal
came to Canada in 1908
with the whole family after living and working here on his
own for a
couple years. Four of their children were born in
Volhynia and four were
born here in Manitoba in the Friedensfeld area. Iam
looking for
documentation of their families in Russia. Julianna'a
maiden name was
Betker. If you have any info please respond. Thanks.
