In addition to searching for a person's name using the jewishgen search
engine, you may also want to search using only the name of a village. This
is also possible with the jewishgen search engine and will give you the
listing of those immmigrating who listed that village as their home. It is
possible you will find someone you did not already know about or find your
person with a spelling you never would have imagined.

I also find it helpful when looking at a strange spelling, to say the name
aloud. When I pronounced "Amiel" out loud, (long "a" and accent on the first
syllable), I could just hear my grandmother's pronunciation of "Emil" and
knew it was my uncle.
