Hello Dave & list members,
there are still other official Ukrainian pages with the villages listed 
in alphabetic order, i.e. under 
http://195.230.149.70:7777/pls/z7502/A004SNP?rdat1=06.07.2004&rf7571=4661 
which is part of gska2.rada.gov.ua , but the whole system seems to be 
still under construction. The local pages show the following items:

1. Kolishnya nazva = former designation
2. Istorichna data utvorenija = historical date of foundation 
["ossification"]
3. Data vidnesenija do kategorii = date of categorical attribution
4. Poshtovije viddilenija = postal department
   Poshtovij indeks = postal code
5. Richka, ozero [morje] = river, lake, sea
6. Teritorija (tis.kv.m) = territory (thousend square meters)
7. Naselenija silske (tis.osib) = rural popilation (thousand inhabitants)
8. Shilnist naselenija (osib/kv.km) = population density (inhabitants 
per square kilometer)

Above all, the first item could - if filled in - be very informative to us.
