 Delores,

There is also a list of occupations on our web site at
http://www.sggee.org/TranslationHelps.html (near the bottom of the page-
use the second link, as it is in English.

The entry shows

Tischer, Tischler, Tischmacher, Tischner - tablemaker; joiner

Be aware, however, that German surnames often are a profession or
occupation. For instance, my surnames include Jaeger= hunter or rifleman
and Geiger= violinist

Perhaps you can tell more if you can tell if the T in Tischler is
capitalized or not? A lower case would likely mean an occupation, but an
upper case letter would like really mean a surname).

  Delores,

I have compiled a list of occupations that I have been using while
extracting information from the records. One day I hope to have it
  printed
  in the SGGEE Journal.

My list shows Tischler as a cabinet or furniture maker.

  Bill

Behind one of my ancestors names in brackets is written(Tischler).
  Is this
a name or an occupation or the maiden name of a previous spouse. I
  assume
that he may have had one as he was 30.
