[Ger-Poland-Volhynia] ways to look for pre-Volhynia family origins

Further to Nancy's suggestions, I know that there were Thiergarth (a very 
uncommon surname) in the Gostynin parish of Russian Poland.  There is a 
good possibility that this was the origin of that family.  You can find 
them in the SGGEE members databases.
