I had intended to post this last weekend but didn't get around to it.

The Edmonton Chapter of the American Historical Society for Germans from
Russia will be hosting a day long seminar featuring Volhynia and Russian
Poland.

Date: April 16, 2005

Time: 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM

Place:
Ritchie Community Centre
7728 - 98 St.
Edmonton, AB

Large portions of the SGGEE Library will be on display and available for
research.

Guest Speaker: Jerry Frank

Topics:
Drang Nach Osten (Part 1)
Under the premise that the German migration to the east was the result of
an ATTRACTION to go, not a push to acquire land, this presentation provides
an overview of the vast German migration to the eastern and southeastern
parts of Europe. It will cover the Baltic States, the Volga River region,
the Black Sea region, Bessarabia, Galicia, and Hungary. Covered will be
the reasons and extent of migration. Most importantly, it will show the
differences between these migrations and prove that, contrary to popular
belief, not all Germans went east at the invitation of Catherine the Great.

Drang Nach Osten (Part 2)
This continuation of Part 1 covers the regions of Volhynia and Russian
Poland. Jerry Frank has special expertise in these areas so they are
covered in a little more detail. The session ends with information about
how these people were forced back to Germany during and after WW II.

The Search for Mokro Niemieckie
Using one of his own ancestral villages as an example, Jerry Frank
describes how to use maps and gazetteers in the search for your
village. Without too much technical detail, he describes the types and
varieties of maps that may be required in the search. He then shows how
maps can be used to enhance your family stories.
