OTTO wakes me up, and I will mix a little bit English with German (my
English is not sufficient - but I think you all have excellent Dictionaries)

1. ABDECKER is not PFERDESCHLÄCHTER
2. ABDECKER is not SCHARFRICHTER

To 1.
ABDECKER is involved in "Entsorgung und Weiterverarbeitung von TIERKADAVER
(=Tierleichen)".

To 2.
The profession Scharfrichter arose with growing of the institutional Monopol
of power in middleage, f.e. in Munich in the 13.Century.
(Before that, right was spoken on another way: the two sides f.e fought a
"Zweikampf" (this could also be done by a "Gottesurteil")watched and judged
by a (SCHIEDS-)RICHTER).

The "ScharfrichterAMT" (Amt=Institution)was complex - he was not only the
"Henker" or "Halsabschneider (=Lugulus)" but had also tasks in civil
judgment in "Zwangsvollstreckung von Schuldnern", "Beaufsichtigung der
Prostitution" (Munich, 14.Century) auch von "Glückspielen" (also Munich
14.C.)


Historically  there are points of contact between SCHARFRICHTER and
ABDECKER: They both belonged to the "Unehrlichen Berufe" - "rechtlich
zurückgesetzte Berufe, verbunden mit sozialer Distanzierung und Verachtung".
(Unehrliche had to wear spezial clothes - this should prevent the members of
the "ehrbaren Stände" of unintentional contact, touching; they were excluded
from civil rights and much more ...)

You have to distinguish in Middle age: Unehrlicher Berufe, unehrlicher Stand
versus ehrbahre Berufe, ehrbarer Stand.
F.e. Abdecker, Bader, Gassenkehrer, Gerber, Gerichts- und Polizeidiener,
Henker (Scharfrichter), Kastrateure, Kloakenfeger, Prostituierte,
Schauspieler, Totengräber .. had been possibly "unehrlich"

In the 17th century Abdecker und Scharfrichter could be sometimes rivals 
f.e. "bei der Bestattung der Selbstmörder- und Deliquentenleichen, sobald
sie unmittelbar im Auftrag der Landgerichte und nicht auf Veranlassung der
Scharfrichter selbst tätig wurden. Darüber hinaus führten Abdecker im
Strafvollzug Brandmarkungen und leichte Torturen aus".

I think in Germany an ABDECKER is the guy who kills the very old horses, 
wich is unable to work  an a farm  - or in other words: a butcher 
especially for horses.
Another german word is PFERDESCHLAECHTER !
