Robert,

I do not know if there is any connection of your family to mine, so
perhaps this email is just a noting of coincidences.

1. My great-grandfather was Johann Schaumann. You may think
immediately no connection, but of Johann's 6 sons, three of them
adopted the name Schuman in Canada, two became Shauman, and one
became Sherman. All this points out is that the same family
surname comes in many spellings.

2. When my great-grandfather left Russia in 1908, after working on
the Trans-Siberian railway construction for at least 10 years, he
stopped in the area of Tomoznia, Lublin, Poland (per stamp in his
Russian passport). I do not know the exact reason for the stop,
since I think it was not on the direct route from Lake Baikal (in
eastern Siberia) to Libau (now Liepija), Latvia where he departed on
a ship for Boston via England. Family folk lore says that he
stopped to visit his oldest son who was stationed there in the
Russian army. I do not know for sure what the oldest son's given
name was, since he was never heard from again, but it was likely
either John or Robert By the way, one of my great uncles was
George, so that is another coincidence in this story.

Would your great-grandfather be a John or a Robert? And do you know
more that would make your story similar to mine?
