My mother's father took his family to Siberia about 1912 (thereabouts) in 
order for the government not to get the rest of his sons into the army. 
Apparently the brothers were fighting each other across the road, so the 
story goes. In the end, the parents died and my mother was left alone at age 
14 to find her way back from Siberia to the Ukraine, which took her 4 years. 
She eventually immigrated to Canada alone to an aunt in Morris. There are 
probably many other similar stories.Hope this sheds some light on some 
stories.
