I have found a Johann Neumann in the Ellis Island Passenger Lists,
and he and his family are one of the many Neumann families that I am
researching in the southeast Edmonton area starting as early as 1892.

Johann Neumann (and his family of Louise, Christian, Rosalie,
Mathilde and Erdmann) arrived at Ellis Island on May 4, 1899 and the
port of departure was Bremen. The shipping company was the
Norddeutscher Lloyd Co. Nationality is given as Russian, and last
residence is listed as "Denyse". Their final destination in the USA
is listed as Winnipeg ["yes, I know that Winnipeg is in Canada"], and
they are going to join an acquaintance in Edmonton named Christof
Lemke. I have found both Johann Neumann and Christof Lemke in the
1901 Census for Canada in the farm area southeast of Edmonton, so
they both made it that far.

On Johann Neumann's death record (1922) from Alberta Vital
Statistics, his place of birth is listed as "Poland".

I have been unable to find this village of "Denyse", and I would
appreciate any suggestions. I suspect strongly that it is in Poland,
but I have not ruled out Volhynia as a possibility.
