[Ger-Poland-Volhynia] LODZ

John and Michael

Thanks for the input. I had searched the SGGEE Lodz database also Das
Telefonbuch in the past. I have about 10 USA records where my grandmother
spells her name Manzei. In the pedigree database you get 16 results
searching for Manzei dating from about 1820. Several are from Lipno. I have
studied the Lipno confirmation records 1867-1906. They are unique for the
period in that you don't have to interpret Russian or Polish spellings. Also
they are mostly alphabetical by year. There are many Manzei, Manthei,
Mantei, etc in these records side by side in the tables. Each family
(parents are listed) always spells their name the same way. Two Manzei's
families I followed cover a span of more then 20 years.
Although these names come from a common root (Guenther says it's Maciej)
they probably separated before my current period of interest 1800-present.

                                        Mike

Importance: High

Mantei/Mantay/Mantey/Manthei etc was in fact a very common name in the
entire region, also in the surrounding parishes.

The German telephone directory, however, also lists about 100 Mancei/Manzei,
so the names does obviously exist.

Trinity parish records for the Manzei name and found none. Your quest for
Rudolf Manzei is about 50 year later than the latest records I have in my
possession.

suggested, and there are many entries of that name to be found in the Lodz
Trinity parish, but of course of an earlier period.

and SSE of Lodz probably extending about 2 or 3 Kms from the city with
several villages within this area.

it is possible to reconcile Manzei with Manthei, there may some information
in the Lodz records to aid your search.
