My great-uncle, Max Knull, a German Ukrainian from Wladimir Wolhynsk,  served 
in the Crimean War fighting for the Russians.  He was killed in WWII  as the 
Russians were pushing the German army back towards Germany.  He was  forced to 
leave his home.  He was shot and killed on the way back to  Germany, even 
though he had fought for the Russians and was loyal to the country  he had always 
lived in.
