When I need an umlaut I just copy and paste one from an email with a few 
German words. Or in windows  I use Start/Programs/Accessories/System 
Tools/Character Map.  e.g. öüÿ

Depending on the Search tool, sometimes you can just skip the 
diacritical marks and still get good results.
