Hello List,

Many of our ancestors passed through Ellis Island during the peak years
of immigration from the 1880s through 1915. We have heard stories that
some were forced to return to Europe because of health issues or were
treated by doctors before they were allowed to settle in the U.S.
Following is a link to an article on the medical examinations performed
at Ellis Island during these years. It is part of a group of articles on
ethical issues and medical practice related to immigration, both
historical and current, in the online ethics journal of the American
Medical Association, /Virtual Mentor/.
