[Ger-Poland-Volhynia] Russian Passports from Volyhnia

My grandmother's uncle, Julius Baier and his wife,
Alwine, plus several children emigrated from
Friedrichsdorf/now Solomka, Kreis Rovno ca. 1903 -
arriving in NY December 24, 1903.  Although they had
passsports, the ship's manifest, the S.S.Campania,
listed them as Julius Menchinger , etc.!  Someone was
related to the Menchinger family in Benton Harbor, MI
and that's where they were going acc. to the manifest.

I'm not sure whether no one could read the passport,
as it was in Russian, or when questioned where they
were going/what's your name, they said Menchinger, or
what, but all the birthdates, first names lined up
with what I knew and a descendant of Julius Baier I
had connected with had a copy of the passport and also
the manifest information.  I just confirmed it when
the Ellis Island records went on line. 

Maybe a search of first names - hopefully unusual -
would help in the search.

I also discovered through www.ancestorsonboard.com
that my grandmother's grandparents, Daniel and
Karoline Baier went to Benton Harbor through
Liverpool, England, via Quebec, then to Benton Harbor.
 Don't know how they travelled from Quebec, but that's
still to be researched.    So maybe broaden the ports
of disembarkment.
