The umlaut over a letter (u, o, a, i, y) is the same as an e after the 
letter.  You must use one or the other for the correct spelling and pronunciation.  
To omit the umlaut or the following e changes the sound and often the meaning. 
 Before the use of the two dots as umlauts, there was often a tiny, slanted 
lower-case e over the u or o or a or i or y.   

The -ke ending usually signifies that line originated from somewhere along 
the north coast, the Baltic or the North Sea,
