[Ger-Poland-Volhynia] Schmidtke of Chelm, Poland, Russia

Unfortunately, the marriage of Julianna Schmidtke to Gottfried Fuhl in
Wladimir-Wolynsk Parish in 1898 is given only in an index and there is
further information. The full marriage record showing ages, birthplaces,
parents may be in the AGAD archive in Warsaw.

Sigrid and Mhairi,

The Chelm reference throws us off a bit as it misses a major time frame in
the life of the Schmidtke family. The Gretna area of Manitoba is a hotbed of
Volhynian Germans, not known for any Russian Poland Germans.

You are correct. The Fuhl surname is very uncommon. It only appears once in
our main database of over 500,000 names. It appears in EWZ records with
origins in Ludmilopol in western Volhynia which is not all that far from
Chelm. It also appears once (same location) showing a birth in 1887 in our
VKP Database (formerly St. Pete Database)

AND

once in that same database showing the marriage of
Julianna Schmidtke to Gottfried Fuhl in Wladimir-Wolynsk Parish in 1898.
see http://www.sggee.org/research/PublicDatabases.html for your own search

Now - go back to the birth records and search only for those with Winkler as
the surname of the mother (much easier than searching for Schmidtke as the
primary surname) . Interestingly enough you will find two Justine Winklers,
one shown as wife of Ferdinand Schmidtke and the other as wife of Heinrich
Schmidtke. You will have to sort out if these are two different families or
two different names for the same man. They are living at either Ludmilpol or
at Elizabetpol, a neighbouring village.

Assuming that your Chelm location is accurate, I can envision the Schmidke
family moving a short distance eastward to the Wladimir-Wolynsk region in
the early 1880s where they have more family and eventually where Julianne
marries.

Jerry
