[Ger-Poland-Volhynia] Contents of Ger-Poland-Volhynia Digest, Vol 95, Issue 14: Fuhl variants

It occurred to me that the variant might be a name I found in both the Plock and Lipno records: Pfohl.  The pronounciation of both is so similar as to be a good possibility.Illiteracy was not as common in the late 19th century, but it may have been earlier, given the lack of cantonates in the late 18th century among the German colonists. But only if the shoe fits will you find the trace, of course.
