[Ger-Poland-Volhynia] Access problems - Online St. Petersburg Records - Official explanation

So Jerry from what you say the "LDS sign in" is different than the account anyone can open up on their website? So we need to know someone who is a member of the LDS (like at our FHC) or become one ourself to have this access?

But it sounded like others periodically read these records. I viewed them two weeks ago. Someone else just two days said he looked at records but yesterday could not. At a minimum their security for this seems to have glitches one way or the other.

Sad news.  I have received an official response from Family Search as follows:

"Thank you for contacting FamilySearch regarding images in the Russia, Lutheran Church Book Duplicates 1833-1885.

This
is a restricted image collection.  FamilySearch has rights given by the
Russian Society of Historians and Archivists, in Moscow, Russia to
publish images online to users with an LDS sign in. An LDS sign in can
only be obtained by those having an LDS membership record number.
These
records are available on microfilm which can be ordered for viewing
into the nearest FamilySearch Center."

As I interpret this, you should not have to order in a microfilm.  You can go to the FamilySearch Centre where you would normally order the microfilm and have an LDS member open the online images for you.  It still means leaving home to do it but that seems to be the best option at this stage.
