Thank you for sharing this Helen. Very interesting. A couple of pictures my mom had seem to be during this Umsiedlung. Several pictures where there are the oddly trimmed trees match some pictures my aunt had from Warthegau.

If anyone is looking for photos of the Warthegau region, there are a number in the searchable German Picture Archive -
http://www.bild.bundesarchiv.de/archives/barchpic/search/_1326932233/?search[action][show_form]=1    I found a number under Wartheland.  There are thumbnail images so it is easy to browse and it is in English.

A photo of the place were our ancestors or parents/grandparents were processed in 1939-41 - the Einwanderer Zentralstelle in Lodz/Litzmannstadt

For those members who are able to read German, here is a history of the Lodz region. This includes history from earliest times, industrial growth, the wars and Wartegau

An explanation of the EWZ categories of Germans -  I, II, III, IV .  Most were in the II level  - those who had retained their German language and culture.  There's also an image of the poster declaring the creation of the Volksliste dated in 1939 as ordered by Arthur Greiser, the Gauleiter of the Warthegau region.
