[Ger-Poland-Volhynia] Gruenberg, Lodzkiego, Poland

John M. and John B.,

I think there is a bit of confusion here regarding the correct location. Gruenberg is correct, not Gruenwald. And Gruenberg is correctly rendered as Zielona Gora but there are several locations like that. The Gruenberg associated with Lodzkiego would be the one close to Lodz city and it was never in Silesia. The coordinates for Google Maps - [51.700651,19.684639] There is a larger town Zielona Gora in Silesia but it would not be associated with Lodz.

You will probably have to look at Catholic records for 1795 if they are available. Lutherans were obligated to register at a Catholic church if a Lutheran one was not yet established in the area. I am not sure which Catholic church that would be. Perhaps someone else on the list can help with that.

With any luck, the records might be with Brzeziny which go well back in the 1700s but I do not know if that would have been the closest church or if the records are viewable online.

You are probably referring to Gruenwald formerly in the extreme north of Lower Silesia. It is now called Zielona Gora, Lodzkiego Poland at 51.9333N and 15.5000E.
There are considerable LDS films available of civil records and Catholic church records with many Evangelical entries included for Gruenberg (Zielona Gora). So far I have only found 2 LDS films of strictly Evangelical records.
Now the bad news...... in the dozens of films available for that area, there are none covering births for 1795. Information I have received from Poland does not indicate birth records for 1795 are available in any of the state archives either.

Good luck!

    Dear Listers

I just found that my GG Grand Father Georg Bettger was born in Gruenberg, Lodzkiego, Poland in 1795. Can anyone tell me where this is and are there Evangelic (Lutheran) church records for that city available on line?

Best Regards
