Hello John,

in addition to his duties as organist and choir leader the cantor was also
active as the local teacher, not only for music. He was the first teacher of
a community. The Kantorsschule was thus led by a cantor. Sometimes you also
can read "Lehrer (teacher) und Kantor". In this case Kantor refers on his
musical duties.

Regards from Germany,

Edelgard

Subject: [Ger-Poland-Volhynia] Word Definition - Kantorsschulen

    Can someone please explain what the role of a Kantorsschulen was in
Volhynia during the late 1800s?

    It is used as follows;
In der Zeit seiner (Pastor Kerm) Wirksamkeit wurden Hunderte von Bethäusern
und Schulhäusern erbaut und ebensoviele Kantorsschulen gegründet und noch
mehr Friedhöfe abgelegt.

With thanks,
John Marsch
