What are Kashubs / Kaschuben ?

The Kashubs are a Slavic tribe dating back to the year 1100. The first Kashubs came to Canada in 1858 and settled around Wilno and Barry's Bay in Ontario. Today, there are many descendants of these early Kashubian immigrants living in that area. If you Google " Kashubs in Canada ", it will take you to their web site.

Kashubs or their descendant can be found in many parts of the world. There is also many Kashubs around Winona, USA. and many other parts in the USA.

At the SGGEE convention in Edmonton in 2010, there was a fair sized display on the Kashubs and Kashubian history. Please see the SGGEE Journal from September 2010. ( page 24 )

Also, in the SGGEE library is a copy of a book with the title : " My Kashubian Heritage ". This book might inform the reader of some of the history of the Kashubs .

....and in case you didn't know, Jim Peplinski, who used to play for the Calgary Flames, was born in Renfrew, Ontario and his ancestors also came from Kashuby.

Otto von Bismark used to love to travel to Kashuby. ( His wife was also from Kashubia )

Kashuby is a part of eastern Pomerania which is also known as the Kaschubian Schweiz / Switzerland.
A wonderful place to visit.

Oh, one more item: On Novemmber 6th. , there will be a meeting of the Alberta Genealogy Society and a
Dr. Kashuba will be the guest speaker.

So, you never know, where names or people originate. That's why genealogy is so much fun.

Greetings to all my friends
