In answering a recent query, I located this interesting link.

It appears to cover every US State and every Canadian province, listing all
the communities, including some abandoned ones, although there isn't much,
if any, info on all of them.  Once you select the community you are
interested in, there may be a link to local cemeteries, but it also
provides a gazetteer to the communities, and cemeteries (although probably
not private or abandoned ones),  community profiles, and other info.  The
maps are interactive.

It may not cover every single community that existed, but might help if you
are looking for info on a still existing small community.  It's worth
exploring.
