Yes, Rose, very sad news. I first met Howard after the St. Pete microfilms became available in the early 1990s. I went to the Family History Library in Calgary to order some in, only to discover that two other people were also interested in what the films. Those two were Howard Krushel and Jerry Frank, both now sadly gone.
Howard was a key ingredient in the early success of SGGEE. Knowledgeable, helpful, and a positive force. The SGGEE library was in his home in northwest Calgary, close to the university, and his door was always open to genealogists interested in Volhynia and related areas. A quarter of a century ago, he gave me a push in the right direction, and it made a huge difference. He continued to help me over the years.
I went to Calgary for Jerry's service, and I saw only one SGGEE person there. I cannot make it to Howard's funeral, but I would urge any SGGEE members and other Volhynian researchers in the Calgary area to attend the service and pay tribute. He did a lot for all of us, quietly, without seeking the limelight. He will be missed.
