[Ger-Poland-Volhynia] learning English

I am told by my father that my g-father, AUGUST FEIFERT, spoke perfect  
English without any accent. However, he came to the US in 1910 at 17 not knowing  
any English whatsoever. How could that be? Could it imply that he was of  
northern German descent?
