[Ger-Poland-Volhynia] Surname Equivalent

My mother's maiden name was Oszczewski. I am interested in your comments as
to the origin or meaning of this Polish surname. Would there be a distant
connection with the name mentioned below - Olszewski?  Thanks, Joan.

The Polish surname is probably Olszewski (not Olschweski).  It is possibly 
derived from Olsza (Olcha), meaning alder, or Olszyna, meaning alder wood or

alder forest.  The German word for alder is Erle.  I don't know if that is 
close enough for Elsner.
