Welcome to the list, Edith.  There is no defined protocol for the 
list.  You just jump in with questions, preferably providing good 
background info.  And you have done just that.

Your best source of info might be a passenger ship record.  Since the 
family apparently stopped in Canada before moving on to North Dakota, 
they probably arrived by a Canadian port.  The Canadian records are 
not yet indexed but you can browse them manually.  At least you have 
the year of 1896 as a probable starting point, perhaps going back to 
1895.  The records are available at 
http://www.collectionscanada.ca/archivianet/passenger/index-e.html 
This record will usually give a place of residence and perhaps a 
place of birth.
