My grandmother and a friend came to America in 1906 - to the Minnesota/North 
Dakota area.  Grandma never applied for citizenship, and later married and 
many years later divorced.  She wrote to the Naturalization dept prior to 
the divorce and remarriage to make sure she wouldn't be sent back to her 
home country.  They sent a letter saying that when she married she 
automatically became a citizen of the U.S.
