Hello all,
To add to Helen's tips about searching for your East European (to meld the G,R,P,U,V origins discussion),
here are some more websites that I have found helpful for Canada --
1) http://automatedgenealogy.com/index.html -- the 1901,1906,1911 Canadian censuses, indexed by name & has digitized images of the census sheets, with land residence noted in census sheet heading...
2) Canadian land records -- a) Glenvow Archives (CPR railroad land grants, 1881-1927 --
http://www.glenbow.org/collections/search/
& B) Western Land Grants (1870-1930), from the LAC (Library & Archives of Canada) -- http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/databases/western-land-grants/index-e.html
3) A map of the German speaking settlements in Alberta, to see how the various settlements fit together --
http://www.ualberta.ca/~german/PAA/Mapplet.html
4) then one should be able to search the Canadian censuses here, by a given location, through this Canadian govt website -- http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/census/index-e.html#databases

Good luck to all in their researches in family history,
