BABIAK Records. Response to tonn at triwest.net
Mr. Tonn,
There are several BABIAKs in Poland. The two major towns are BABIAK, Kreis Kolskie, Poznan was formerly in Russian (Congress) Poland. The other town in the Mazurian District of former East Prussia and during German times was called Frauendorf, I believe. It was renamed following WWII.
The Posnanian Babiak has records from the start of the Lutheran parish there in 1796 to the 1940s, I believe. Prior to that time there are records in part, to my understanding, from about 1776 to 1796 in the Lutheran church in Wladyslawow by Turek, which was then in the Kalisch provincial area, I believe. Apparently, from what I have read, there was a predecessor church in Wladyslawow starting in 1749. I believe the Wladyslawow records are on LDS film, as I believe the Babiak records are. However, from those with superior knowledge of the area have conveyed that not all of the records remained in tact.
Babiak was a parish church that incorporated a wide ranging area. I am not sure of all the outlying church affiliations, but I know it reached out at least 30 -40 miles north to Kozki and Byton, now Kuyavian Pomorskie Voivodship (Province), outside of Poznan provincial lines. However, if you go to http://gedbas.genealogy.net/ or gedbas Ahnenforschung, and search under Babiak under Placenames, you can bring up a wide ranging number of surnames dating back to some of the early years.
>From my studies, some of the earliest colonists in the area were from the Driesen area, Kreis Friedeburg, Neumark, Brandenburg, in the Netzebruch area. This is confirmed by some of my ancestral surnames. Also, there was a population from West Prussia, and in part from East Prussia. Dr. Breyer mentions the connection to Driesen in his book on the area in 1935, which is on-line in German. Also, several other researchers mention this connection to the early years of Babiak.
I have some family connection in Wawryzyny Hollander in 1789, which was about 1 mile NW of Babiak town, which can be found on the 1803 Tilly map of South Prussia. Possibly other surnamed relatives lived in the same parish to the east by about 12 miles or so, and also, north by about 30-40 miles. This last connection supposedly dates to about 1776. Apparently, my ggg grandfather lived in the area for several years, however, I cannot find any Polish records to confirm it; however, there are death records in Russia, which allude to it.

Yes, it is a little bit difficult for all electronic systems
to
translate more than 200 years old documents into a modern understandabel
english.
Those systems dont have the feelings for an old dialect in its regional
and social surrounding or into the old area.

I was searching the location of Gornica in 19th century - both in Austro-Hungary, Kingdom of Poland and Russian Empire.

Does anyone have access to the 1 Apr 1795 records for births in Bycz?
Probably under Babiak at that time. I show family lore says Johan Tonn
born 1 Apr 1795, but there are other records showing a christening in
1811, so i'm wondering when he was really born. He married Anna
Karoline Zuelke/Zielke and had 7 children, if my info is correct,
including Wilhelm Ludwig (1837 and always called Ludwik), August 1840,
Gottlieb 1844, Justine 1846, Anna
Karoline 1849, Luise 1851, Friedrich
1854, Samuel 1857. Johann may also have been married to Anna Karoline
Wilhelmine Natchigall, no children. If no one has the film handy, I'll
order it from the LDS. thank you.
