Helwig/Hellwig/Helweg and other various spellings may indicate an origin in Saxony. This name was
common in that area. An number of Helwigs fought with the Saxon army which participated in the Thirty Year War (ca 1650) Great Northern War (ca 1710), War of Polish Succesion (ca 1735) and later wars fought on soil now in Poland. Some were even given grants of land in Poland for their service. For example, Georg Helwig and descendents were given the inheritable schutz privileg (right to manage and gain profit from a village) for Buchholz in West Prussia in 1682.
