[Ger-Poland-Volhynia] adoption

Kristen,

Since the year is 1919, it might be that the child was
orphaned due to the big Spanish Flu epidemic that went
round the world about that time - after WWI. That flu
was devastating and decimated families and villages.

My mother's maternal grandfather and paternal
grandmother both died during this period in 1919. As
did scores of others, I am sure. They lived northwest
of Rowno in Wolhynia in a village called Solomka
(formerly Friedrichsdorf). They had only just
returned from Siberia (near Chelabynsk), having
survived deportation there in July 1915.

I would think that if the parents of your Adeline had
died in this epidemic, the child would have gone to
the next closest family, if possible, and if not, then
whoever in the village could take her in.

IMHO
