[Ger-Poland-Volhynia] Please recommend a good history book

Thanks for the replies so far in regards to my request for Volhynian History Books. I've already read everything I could find on the Internet and still craving more information. If any books come to mind that cover between 1875 and 1910, regardless how brief or thorough, your reply will be much appreciated.

I also wanted to add that thanks to the good folks in this forum I've managed to pinpoint on both old and new maps the cities of birth of my father and his siblings in Volhynia.

Keep up the good work!

Freda Becker

Greetings.

I am slowly translating my grandfather George Tomesch's self-published
autobiography "Kreuzwege meines Lebens".  In it he describes his life
through WW2 in Gdynia, Lodz and the labor camps in Donbas, along with his
subsequent life in Canada.  My grandfather believes that most of his family
came from Lodz and in one part of the book he mentions "Da der evangelische
Friedhof unweit der Wisner Uliza sich befand, besuchten wir manchmal auch
die Graber von Oma und Opa Tomesch, sowie die der Weiteren Tomesch
Sippschaft."

I've translated this to: "Since the Protestant cemetery was near the Ulitsa
Wisner, we sometimes visited the graves of grandma and grandpa Tomesch, and
the rest of the Tomesch clan."

So my question is, what is Ulitsa Wisner?  Is it a street?  Does this
cemetery still exist?  Are there transcriptions of it?

Also, does anyone know if there are records available for St.
Johanniskirche in Lodz during the 1920s+?

Thanks!

Natalie

The Russian word for "street" is "?????" and is transliterated and pronounced "ulitsa".  Perhaps there was a major thoroughfare with the name of "Wisner", that is, "Wisner Street" to which your grandfather is making reference.  Also, consider the following possible translations:
- "evangelische" as "Lutheran"
- "weiteren Tomesch Sippshaft" as "the greater Tomesch clan".

If I order Film #1884104, would I get more information than what is in the
VKP records below?

Also, I see the records have Kamionka, Kamenka and Antonettenthal which is
called a colony.  Would the colony be near Kamenka or what would be the set
up?

I am researching the Zipps & Rucks.  Because both my grandparents died
before my parents were married, I have not been able to go farther than my
Ruck Grandmother.

Using Google Maps and these coordinates 51.777632,19.43592 you will find the main cemetery in Lodz which includes a Lutheran section.? It is possible there were others but I suspect this is the one referred to.? However, I have not been able to find a historical map of Lodz with street names that would help to confirm the reference to Ulitsa Wisner.

It is a huge cemetery so it would take some effort to find the graves.? I am going to be there in two weeks but will not have time to do any cemetery research.

Hello all,

I'd love to learn as much as possible about the history of Volhynia beginning approximately 1875 to 1910. My grandparents lived in Volhynia during that time and had 6 children there before migrating to America in 1909. Can anyone please recommend a good book, in English, for understanding the history, culture, and/or political and religious factors that influenced settlers into Volhynia as well as the mass exodus to North America.

Thanks in advance,

Freda Becker

A Russian student translated my grandfather's passport, who was a German
living in Russia (I think).
The translation said it was in the Kovensky Province issued in Kovn-Ugolya
on the 3rd day in 1899 for 10 Rubles.

I think this may have been Kovno or Kowno (present day Kaunas, Lithuania,
based on where my grandfather lived.
It would have been on the main railroad line through East Prussia to
Russia making it easy to get to.

Has anyone heard of that city or province in the 1899 time period?

A bare bones history is avlb on line
?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Volhynia??
?
plus there are a number of links to other bits of history of the area
?
like this about the immigration of Germans FROM Wolhynia in 1939-49
?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polish_areas_annexed_by_Nazi_Germany
?
Any history text I have seen in English is, unfortunately, pretty short on details.
