  Marcia,

      You are right that some people moved on from the
 Bialystok area to Volhynia.

     My Huebner family arrived in Knyszyn in the 1830s,
 there were still related Huebners in the Bialystok area
 at the outbreak of WWII, 1939/40.

     The Gruenkes arrived in Knyszyn around 1843. My ancestor
 Ludwig Gruenke married Mathilde Huebner in 1848, they moved on
 to Volhynia in 1852.  His brother Ferdinand Gruenke also left
 the Bialystok area for Volhynia,  in the late 1860s.

      I haven't seen any German name for Knyszyn.

      I would still encourage you to check other years in
 the Bialystok parish records - you might still find a brother
 or sister in the Baum family, which would at least confirm
 that you are looking in the right place.
